TRAVEL EXPO
About the project
Class IV students set out on an exciting Project-Based Learning journey with the Travel Expo, where creativity, mathematics, and teamwork blended seamlessly. The students stepped into the shoes of travel agents, designing unique travel packages within a fixed budget, applying their understanding of addition, subtraction, and money concepts to solve real-life problems.
Driving Questions
How can we, as travel agents, design exciting travel packages within a budget?
Process
The project began with an entry event featuring travel-themed slideshows of beaches, forts, and mountains to spark curiosity. Students reflected on their own holiday experiences, discussing where they travelled, what they spent on, and how they estimated costs. A special guest, a real travel agent, shared insights on planning trips, managing money, and meeting client needs.
Students worked collaboratively in teams, each member taking on specific real-world roles and then collectively brainstorming and making decisions. The Researcher explored destinations, collected data on travel, stay, food, and attractions. The Design Editor ensured all information was creatively and neatly presented in brochures. The Budget Manager tracked costs, made calculations, and balanced Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages. A presenter was also identified to showcase the travel package to parents and peers.
With these roles, students:
- Planned dream trips within ₹20,000 using addition and subtraction skills to balance destinations, activities, and costs.
- Designed brochures for Silver, Gold, and Platinum travel packages.
- Prepared customized travel plans on demand at the Budget and Customisation Desk during the expo, filling out mini-budget sheets for visitors.
- Practiced real-world applications like checking itineraries for errors and adjusting plans when budgets got tight.
Throughout the process, students integrated English by creating catchy taglines for their brochures and Hindi by writing descriptive paragraphs about their chosen destinations. Library resources supported research to make travel packages more authentic and engaging.

Project Culmination
The Travel Expo was held at the amphitheatre and auditorium, where students presented their travel packages to peers, teachers, and parents. Dressed as enthusiastic travel agents, they showcased their Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans — complete with brochures, posters, and budget sheets. The highlight was watching students calculate costs in real-time for visitors who requested customised trips, demonstrating their mastery of both mathematical concepts and communication skills.
Teacher Reflection
Guiding Class IV through this PBL journey has been immensely rewarding. What began as simple addition and subtraction exercises transformed into a real-world simulation of financial planning and decision-making. Students took ownership of their roles, collaborated effectively, and gained confidence not only in mathematics but also in communication, organization, and critical thinking.
The Travel Expo brought learning alive, as students explained packages, justified costs, and persuaded visitors to ‘book’ their trips, which was a proud moment. This project reaffirmed that when math meets life, students don’t just learn, they thrive.
